ICAN is pleased to announce that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sent a demand for information to a California-based start-up, flagged by ICAN, that has been openly engaging in geoengineering since 2023.
Specifically, EPA “submitted a demand for information to a start-up company calling themselves ‘Make Sunsets,’ which is launching balloons filled with sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ) seeking to geoengineer the planet and generate ‘cooling’ credits to sell. This issue was initially identified in 2023 during the last Administration, but no action was taken to find out more about this questionable start-up and activity.”
The issue was brought to EPA’s attention in 2023 by ICAN. As Siri & Glimstad attorney Catherine Ybarra discussed with Del Bigtree on The Highwire in January, in late 2023 ICAN wrote to the EPA twice to ask EPA to review and address the experimental solar geoengineering activities being conducted by Make Sunsets. In response, ICAN received a dismal letter that acknowledged Make Sunsets is engaging in geoengineering and in which the EPA, incredibly, admitted to participating in geoengineering research. It even provided a link to the Biden administration’s research plan for geoengineering. ICAN responded with a third letter, pushing back on EPA’s failure to act against Make Sunsets and the ongoing geoengineering.
Thankfully, the current administration is taking the threat of geoengineering seriously and taking action “to get answers and plans to take additional actions as necessary.”
“‘The idea that individuals, supported by venture capitalists, are putting criteria air pollutants into the air to sell ‘cooling’ credits shows how climate extremism has overtaken common sense,’ said EPA Administrator Zeldin. ‘Based on Make Sunsets’ responses to our information request, we will look into all our authorities to ensure that we continue maintaining clean air for all Americans.’”
ICAN’s legal team continues to shine a light upon and prevent improper geoengineering and weather modification activities. ICAN will continue to hold the government accountable to its responsibilities to ensure every American has the right to clean air and clear skies.
